J’aimee Skippon-Volke, Director of the Byron Bay International Film Festival has a growing reputation for cutting-edge curation & developing of rich and diverse programmes of entertaining, inspiring & thought provoking films and film events which enhance our worldview & collective social dialogue through the power and storytelling of film.
J’aimee, has a truly international perspective, born in Australia, she spent much of her childhood in NZ, the US & the UK. It was in the UK where the curtains opened on J’aimee’s love of underground & independent cinema. Growing up in Covent Garden in Central London, she discovered the cinematic offerings at the ICA (Institute of Contemporary Arts) a hub for the exploration of radical art & culture. Her appetite for inventive and alternative programming was fuelled further as a teen by the infamous Scala Cinema in Kings Cross & their all-night movie marathons of cult classics.
She worked in the UK’s TV industry & after a stint in the USA, decided to ‘give Australia a go’. Always precocious she entered motherhood in her early 20’s and later moved to Byron Bay in order to raise & grow her family in a cleaner and greener environment.
J'aimee is a long-term board member of Screenworks, and also spend many years of the board of the Byron Bay Community Association as well as local tourism associations - community values are close to her heart.
J’aimee and her partner Osvaldo Alfaro, BBFF’s Technical Director, have grown BBFF exponentially over the past 9 years into Australia’s largest regional film festival, a 10-day event, highly regarded by the global Independent Film community. BBFF’s unique culture and flourishing international reputation sees both esteemed international filmmakers and emerging values-aligned artists vying for a place in its programme. With trademark ethics and selectivity, BBFF offers audience members & filmmakers the opportunity to be part of more meaningful screen culture experience.
The best is yet to come - as Virtual & Augmented Reality emerge into mainstream consciousness I am extremely excited about the possibilities this brings - as this is an area I have been engaging with since the last century. I curate VR for BBFF and other events, exhibit it with the aid of GreenhouseFX 3D|VR and I have established Creative Reality, a Production Company focused on creating innovative VR content which enables the growth of the industry.
In 2016 I thoroughly enjoyed working with the team at Australia's fastest growing remote visual effects company - Cumulus Visual Effects, besides providing high-end VFX to large scale Australian productions, Cumulus's sister company Syclone was developing an important piece of software specifically aimed at the VFX Industry as well as remote Creative Practitioners working with large-scale data.
Having lived here in the Northern Rivers for nearly 20 years many of what I consider to be personal career highlights occurred in London where I worked in film as a Production Manager, in TV - both on set with the camera team and in the fortunate position as PA to the Executive Producers (where I truly consider that I learned the ropes as computers were still just glorified typewriters and so everything came through me), I would research and develop ideas. I was fortunate to work out at Pinewood Studios and also in post production in Soho. Employers included Griffin Productions - a Yorkshire/Carlton Subsidiary, Roach and Partners - making content for BBC1, and Complete Post - a subsidiary of Celador.
