Five-months, paid placements in film and TV post-production – are you ready to make it yours?

Delivered by Screenworks in partnership with Netflix, Screen Tasmania and AFTRS, Regional Crew Pathways returns to Tasmania, with applications now open, closing April 23 at 9AM AEST! This year’s Tasmanian edition of the program will specifically focus on post-production.

We’re calling for applications from Tasmanians with a qualification in screen and media, or who possess transferable skills from another industry, or have experience making content, and who are committed to kickstarting their career in the screen industry.

If that sounds like you, apply now to Regional Crew Pathways!

This is the second year running in Tasmania, with Juliet May from Northern Tasmania selected for the paid placement in 2025. After completing the program, Juliet was offered ongoing work at Hive Studios, an Emmy award-winning post-production and VFX company.

Her story is what Regional Crew Pathways is all about – providing training and below-the-line career avenues in the screen industry for Tasmanians, while directly addressing identified crewing skill gaps.

So How Does it Work?

Regional Crew Pathways is a two-step training program.

  • In step one, up to sixteen selected participants undertake AFTRS’ three-day Post-Production Onboarding course, delivered in-person. The Onboarding course will empower you with everything you need to know about starting work in a post-production environment with a specific focus on unscripted content. You’ll be introduced to workflows and processes, key roles and skills, as well all the tools and technology involved in professional post-production. Participants will also learn about the pathways into a post-production career.
  • In step two, one selected participant is placed for five-months in an ongoing paid placement with production and post-production companies across entry-level post-production roles.

What You’ll Gain

If selected for the AFTRS Post-Production Onboarding course, you’ll walk away with:

  • A specific, strong understanding of what’s involved in industry-standard post-production workflows.
  • Knowledge of the employment process in the screen sector, including how to look for opportunities, develop networks and advance your skills.
  • Training in post-production skills by Australia’s leading film and television school.

If selected for the five-months paid placement, you’ll gain:

  • Five-months, fully-paid employment.
  • Screen credits, employable skills and industry networks.
  • Practical, on-the-job training to current industry standards.
  • A foot in the door for future work.

  • Possess a relevant qualification in the screen industry, OR;
  • Have experience in making your own content, OR;
  • Have relevant, transferable experiences from other industries (i.e social media content creation, print and design, software and technology, hospitality and events)

Is the placement paid?

Yes. If selected for the placement, you will be employed by Screenworks for the traineeship period and paid the Level 1 MPPCA minimum crew rate, plus 12% superannuation guarantee and loadings.

What roles will I gain experience in if I'm selected for the paid placement?

This edition of Regional Crew Pathways is focussed on unscripted post-production, so if you’re selected for the paid placement, you’ll gain experience across entry-level roles in this phase of production.

If I'm unsuccessful, can I reapply in the future?

Yes, as long as you meet the eligibility requirements.

I want to submit a sample of my work. How do I upload this?

If you have something you’ve created, such as a short film, please upload to a hosting website such as Youtube or Vimeo and provide us with a working, valid link in your CV or the body of your application. If it is password protected, please ensure that you share the password with us.

If you’re applying as someone who creates and produces your own content, please make sure you share a sample of your work with us and your role/s in creating the work.

Where will the AFTRS Course take place?

The AFTRS Post-Production Course is planned to take place during May, with venue to be advised. If you’re selected for the first step of Regional Crew Pathways, you’ll be notified of Course dates, times and venue via email.

Participants selected for the Course must attend the course to be considered for the paid placement.

Where will the work placements take place?

It is expected that placements will predominantly be with production companies and in post-production departments in Tasmania, but there may be some interstate opportunities as well.

Travel is sometimes unavoidable in the screen industry. If you’re selected for the paid placement, you may need to be flexible around commuting interstate or being based away from home for some of your on-the-job training.

How will I be assessed and what happens when I complete my paid placement?

Objectives for paid placements will be set and monitored with the help of Screenworks, based on a training plan the selected participant who receives placement is required to complete. The training plan confirms their work and sets out their placement accomplishments.

At the completion of placement, the participant must provide a report detailing their experience and training.

What if I don’t complete my paid placement?

In the instance you don’t successfully undertake the work on the paid placement you’ve been provided with, you and Screenworks will work to resolve any and all issues. If these issues cannot be resolved and the participant is unable to reach competence, they will be withdrawn from the program.
