Accelerating emerging games talent through targeted support and industry access.

The Opportunity

Screenworks is proud to launch the Digital Games Pathway Program – a new professional development initiative designed to support emerging and early-career games practitioners to take the next step in their careers.

With the support of Screen NSW, this inaugural program provides targeted financial support, industry access and career-building opportunities for individuals working across the digital games sector, including game design, development, art, production, narrative, audio and related disciplines.

How It Works

Applicants are required to submit a 12-month Career Plan to the value of $2,000 for professional development, with an additional $1,500 for travel support, outlining activities to grow their skills and advance their careers.

This may include:

  • Training or professional development courses
  • Attendance at conferences, events, or markets
  • Mentoring or guidance from industry professionals

Career plans should be practical, focused and demonstrate a strong commitment to professional growth within the digital games industry.

FAQs

More than you might think. Games are a storytelling medium – just interactive. Skills in narrative, directing performance, visual storytelling, producing and sound all translate directly. The shift is thinking about player experience – how audiences engage with and influence the story. As part of your application, you’ll map this transition, outlining how you’ll use the program funds to build on your existing skills in a games context.

Yes. The program is designed for screen practitioners who are new to games as well as those with some experience. What matters most is a clear intention to explore the sector and a well-thought-out plan for how you’ll use the opportunity.

That’s absolutely fine. Game development is collaborative and relies on a wide range of roles beyond animation – writing, design, producing, sound and more. The program is about helping you identify where your strengths fit, and your career plan is your opportunity to outline the specific skills you want to develop and how the program funds will support that journey.

There’s a clear pathway.
  • Writers can move into narrative design, dialogue, and branching storytelling
  • Directors bring strengths in tone, performance, pacing and creative leadership
  • Producers bring skills in project management, budgeting, scheduling and team coordination – essential for any game production
The key is adapting your craft for interactivity – and your career plan should detail how you’ll build those skills, whether through training, mentorship, or developing your own project using the program funding.

We’re not expecting a polished long-form document. Your career plan should clearly outline what skills you want to build, how you’ll build them, and how you’ll use the program funds to support that. The strongest applications are specific, achievable, and aligned with your existing experience.

The funding is flexible, but it must support your transition into games. This could include courses, workshops, software, travel to industry events, mentorship, or time to develop a prototype. Your career plan should itemise how the funds will be spent and why each element will help move your practice into games.

No – but it can help. You don’t need a fully formed concept, but having an area of interest (e.g. narrative games, mobile, interactive documentary) can strengthen your career plan by giving it focus and direction.

You’ll leave with a clearer understanding of where you fit within the games industry, expanded professional networks, and tangible progress toward your goals – whether that’s new skills, a developed concept, or the early stages of a playable project.

Australia’s games industry is expanding rapidly with increased government and screen agency support, global investment, and a thriving indie sector. It’s one of the fastest-growing screen-based industries worldwide. For Screenworks members, this means real opportunities to diversify your career – and this program is designed to help you take a strategic step into that space through a clearly defined career plan supported by program funding.

Because the games industry is expanding quickly, and this is a supported, low-risk way to explore it – and if you’re selected you’ll be resourced to take a meaningful step into games.
