Backed by Netflix, supported by Screen Queensland and AFTRS, and delivered by Screenworks, we’re proud to bring the latest edition of Regional Crew Pathways to Queensland, with applications now open and closing November 21.
The program provides training and below-the-line career pathways in the screen industry for people living in regional Queensland, in addition to directly addressing crewing skill gaps identified within the industry. Regional people supported through the program have gone on to flourishing careers in the screen industry.

So How Does it Work?
Regional Crew Pathways is a two-step training program.
- In step one, twenty selected participants undertake AFTRS’ On-Set Onboarding course, delivered across three days on the Sunshine Coast, from December 9 to 11. The Onboarding course will give you everything you need to know about starting work on a film set, from on-set etiquette, paperwork and reading a call sheet, to the different roles in each department. Participants will also learn what makes a great CV and how to apply for work in a crew.
- In step two, one selected participant is placed for six-months in ongoing paid work with production companies and on film and television sets across entry-level roles, due to commence in January, 2026.
What You’ll Gain
If selected for the AFTRS On-Set Onboarding course, you’ll walk away with:
- Training in on-set crew skills by Australia’s leading film and television school.
- Hands-on guidance through the production process, covering how film and TV shows go from script to screen.
- An understanding of the key skills and processes expected of entry–level crew members across the different roles of the production office, production set and unit base.
- Knowledge of the employment process in the screen sector, including how to design your resume, develop networks and advance your
skills.
If selected for the six-months paid placement, you’ll gain:
- Six-months, fully-paid employment.
- Screen credits, employable skills and industry networks.
- Practical, on-the-job training to current industry standards.
- A foot in the door for future work.
Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for Regional Crew Pathways, you must:
- Live in regional Queensland, defined by Screen Queensland as at least 100km from the Brisbane and Gold Coast Central Business Districts.
- Meet one of the following:
- A qualification in the screen industry.
- Experience in making your own content.
- Relevant, transferable experiences from other industries, including hospitality, hair and make-up, event management and carpentry.
- Not have worked in a paid screen industry role prior to applying for Regional Crew Pathways.
- Not be studying or in full-time education as of applying.
- Be at least 18 years old as of applying.
- Be ready and able to commit to six-months paid-work if selected.

Key Dates
- Applications are now open and will close on Friday, November 21 at 9AM, Queensland time.
- The On-Set Onboarding course will run from Tuesday, December 9, to Thursday, December 11, on the Sunshine Coast. Participants selected for the Onboarding course must attend this to be considered for the paid placement. Participants selected for the Onboarding course will need to make their own arrangements to attend on the Sunshine Coast.
- The paid placement is due to start in January 2026. The one selected participant for the six-months paid placement must make themselves fully available for full-time work during this period.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What experience do I need to apply?
Applicants don’t need professional experience working in a crew role on set. However, applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
- A qualification in the screen industry
- Experience in making their own content
- Relevant, transferable experiences from other industries, including hospitality, hair and make-up, event management and carpentry
Are the traineeships paid?
Yes. If selected for the placement, you will be employed by Screenworks for the traineeship period and paid the Level 1 MPPCA minimum crew rate, plus 12% superannuation guarantee and loadings.
What roles will I gain experience in if I'm selected for the on-set placement?
If selected for the six-month placement, you’ll be introduced to a variety of entry-level roles during your on-the-job training across different, all while being supported by your work placement manager. Previous program participants have been placed in art, camera and electrical departments, as well post-production areas, however, roles are dependant on what’s available.
If I'm unsuccessful, can I reapply in the future?
Yes, as long as you meet the eligibility requirements.
I want to submit a sample of my work. How do I upload this?
If you have something you’ve created, such as a short film, please upload to a hosting website such as Youtube or Vimeo and provide us with a working, valid link in your CV or the body of your application. If it is password protected, please ensure that you share the password with us.
If you’re applying as someone who creates and produces your own content, please make sure you share a sample of your work with us and your role/s in creating the work.
Where will the AFTRS’ course take place?
The AFTRS’ On-Set Onboarding course will take place on the Sunshine Coast, from Tuesday, December 9, to Thursday, December 11. The exact venue is TBC.
Participants selected for the Onboarding course must attend the course to be considered for the paid placement.
Where will the work placements take place?
It is expected that placements will predominantly be with production companies and on productions in Queensland, but there may be some interstate opportunities as well.
Travel is sometimes unavoidable in the screen industry. If you’re selected for the paid placement, you may need to be flexible around commuting interstate or being based away from home for some of your on-the-job training.
How will I be assessed and what happens when I complete my placement?
Objectives for placements will be set and monitored with the help of Screenworks, based on a training plan the selected participant who receives placement is required to complete. The training plan confirms their work and sets out their placement accomplishments.
At the completion of placement, the participant must provide a report detailing their experience and training.
What if I don’t complete my placement?
In the instance you don’t successfully undertake the work on the placement you’ve been provided with, you and Screenworks will work to resolve any and all issues. If these issues cannot be resolved and the participant is unable to reach competence, they will be withdrawn from the program.
