Screenworks in partnership with Netflix, Screen Territory and the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) is expanding the career boosting Regional Crew Pathways Program to the Northern Territory. This entry level initiative will train up to 20 early career screen and media practitioners into below the line roles and provide a paid placement in a crew role.

Supported by Netflix, Regional Crew Pathways started as a pilot in Northern NSW and then extended to include North and Far North Queensland and most recently Tasmania. Eleven participants have been through the paid placements and have secured ongoing work in crew roles, or gone on to further study. With the success of the program in these regions across Australia, Screenworks and Netflix set their sights on the Northern Territory to give emerging talent the opportunity to flourish in their screen careers.

This opportunity is ideal for graduates of screen and media courses, as well as those with relevant and transferable skills from other industries such as hospitality, hair and make-up, event management, carpentry or those who are making their own screen content. Successful applicants will gain practical on the job training, networking opportunities, and industry immersion.

The Regional Crew Pathways Program is a two-step training program that includes an initial AFTRS ‘On Set On Boarding’ course followed by a paid placement in early entry crew roles for one selected participant over six months. This program provides training and screen industry career pathways for people and directly addresses identified below the line skill gaps in addition to building screen production capacity in regional areas.

Screenworks and Netflix encourage applications from people from diverse backgrounds who may not otherwise have the opportunity to access work opportunities.

“We have had such great employment results for the participants from previous years of this program.” explains Lisa O’Meara, Screenworks CEO. “The industry connections that the trainees make through this program and the onset skills they develop has made a huge difference to their ability to secure further work.”

“Screen Territory is committed to growing a strong, skilled local crew base, and the Regional Crew Pathways Program is a key part of that vision. As such we’re delighted to be partnering with Screenworks, Netflix, and AFTRS on this initiative. As production levels rise in the NT, this program ensures that emerging crew gain the experience and training they need to thrive in the screen industry and contribute to the success of local and international productions,” said Jennie Hughes, Director of Screen Territory.

Robbie Miles, Head of Industry and Alumni at AFTRS said, “AFTRS is proud to partner with Screenworks and Netflix on this initiative, which embodies our commitment to practical, industry-focused training and creating more career pathways into the screen industry. Programs like this are essential in building a robust and inclusive screen industry for the future.”

Applications are now open and will close 5:00 pm 14 March.

The paid placement is due to start in April.
