Karen is a writer, producer, inclusive content creator and award-winning short film director from Gimuy-Cairns. She holds a Bachelor in Creative Industries, as well as a Bachelor in Social Sciences (Intellectual Disability Studies). She has worked as a creative in the disability sector for over twenty years and currently sits on the Screenworks FNQ & NQ Advisory Board. She has also worked in Indigenous communities across Cape York as a Coordinator of Indigenous Recreational Services with C.A.P.E. PCYC for over eighth years.

Karen has numerous features and TV projects in development, two of which have received Screen Queensland development funding. Her feature RAY OF SUNSHINE – under option with Chris Hilton, CEO of Tilt-Media – was selected by MIFF to attend the 2024 London Production Finance Market. Her feature screenplay, GIRL ON THE EDGE, was a finalist in the 2024 edition of AACTA Pitch: Regional Landscapes. During her time as program participant for Inside the Writers Room, she observed a writers room with Hoodlum Entertainment.

Her most recent inclusive short film THE DO’S & DON’TS OF GETTING MARRIED has screened worldwide, won numerous national awards, and has been selected for BAFTA and Academy Award-Qualifying film festivals.

With a deep love of story and craft, Karen’s work sits at the intersection of heart and curiosity; the unfeigned love stories we have with ourselves and each other, alongside the absurd comedic qualities and existential nature of life itself.

“Through Screenworks, I’ve received the most incredible levels of professional development and support. The team is a powerhouse of knowledge.

I would not be where I am today without the belief, support and generosity of Screenworks.”
