Open to early career Screen Directors from regional NSW, regional Queensland, Australian Capital Territory and Tasmania
Screenworks, in partnership with the Australian Directors Guild and Linnaeus Estate Education Fund, is offering regionally based screen directors an opportunity to connect with and learn from two of Australia’s most accomplished screen directors in a two-day intensive on the craft of screen directing.
Documentary Director Anna Broinowski (Aim High in Creation) and Drama Director Ana Kokkinos (Seven Types of Ambiguity) will be joined by Australia Director’s Guild CEO, Kingston Anderson to inspire and inform 12 early career Screen Directors from regional Australia.
Screenworks Directing Intensive will be held at Linnaeus Estate near Byron Bay on July 7&8 with a special Q & A event on the evening of July 6.
Entry to Screenworks Directing Intensive is by application. Participants will be selected by a panel including representatives from ADG, Screenworks and each of the participating state and territory funding bodies.
This is a rare opportunity to connect with and receive advice from prominent Australian screen directors and the Australian Directors Guild.

ANNA BROINOWSKI
Dr. Anna Broinowski is a Walkley award-winning filmmaker, documentary lecturer and author. Documentaries include Aim High in Creation! (ABC/NETFLIX usa), Forbidden Lie$ (SBS/UKCH4/ Showtime), Helen’s War (SBS/CBC/PBS) and Hell Bento!! (SBS).
Awards include 3 AFIs (Aactas), Best Film at Silverdocs USA, the Al Jazeera Golden Award, a Russian Film Critics’ Prize, The NSW Premier’s Literary Award, and the Writer’s Guild of America (East and West) Best Nonfiction Screenplay.
Anna’s book about filming in North Korea, The Director is the Commander (2015), was shortlisted for the Adelaide Writers’ Festival and NIB Waverley Best nonfiction awards. It is out in the USA this year.
ANA KOKKINOS
Acclaimed writer/director Ana Kokkinos’ career spans film and TV. Her films have won over 30 national and international awards.
Ana’s third feature Blessed had its World Premiere at the Melbourne International Film Festival in 2009. Blessed was selected for Main Competition at San Sebastian where it won the Grand Jury Prize for Best Screenplay. Blessed was in official selection at Toronto, London, Palm Springs and the Giffoni Children’s Film Festival in Italy, where it won Best Film as voted by an international jury of 700 teenagers.
In 2010, Ana was honoured at the Seattle International Film Festival as an Emerging Master Filmmaker and was honoured with a retrospective of her work.
Her first full-length feature Head On was selected for Director’s Fortnight at Cannes and won numerous international awards including 8 AFI nominations.
Ana’s second feature, The Book of Revelation was selected for the Visions Section at the Toronto International Film Festival and sold to 30 territories.
Her short feature Only The Brave was selected for Venice and Toronto, achieving theatrical releases in Australia, the UK and America. It won 15 international awards including 3 AFI Awards (including Best Film and Best Script).
Kokkinos has also directed episodes of The Secret Life of Use and Eugenie Sanlder PI, which won an AFI Award for Best Children’s TV Drama. More recently, she directed Massacre at Myall Creek as part of the Australia On Trial series for the ABC, and episodes of The Time of Our Lives.
In 2017, Ana directed episodes of Pulse (Ep 6, Finalist, Diversity Awards, MIPCOM 2017) and Seven Types of Ambiguity for Matchbox Pictures.
Ana served on the Board of Film Victoria for nine years.
Kokkinos has also taught extensively at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School and RMIT. She conducts ongoing masterclasses for professional actors and Lectures in the School of Culture and Communication at Melbourne University.
KINGSTON ANDERSON
The ADG is a registered industry association representing the interests of film, television and digital media directors, documentary makers and animators throughout Australia.
As the Executive Director of the Australian Directors’ Guild, Kingston is responsible for the management of one of the main organisations that represents over 650 Australian directors. His responsibilities include policy development, event management and overseeing the different state committees of the Guild. He comes from a theatre and film background working as a theatre director, film and television producer, as well as a consultant for screen organisations across Australia. He was the manager of the Production Liaison Unit of the NSW Film and Television Office for three years and has served on a number of boards, including the Association of Film Commissions International. He produced Aftershocks (SBS), Taxi School (SBS), A Frontier Conversation (NITV) and Kulka (NITV).
Eligible Regional areas
In NSW – regional areas are defined on the State Council map on the Screen NSW website, and includes all areas outside metropolitan Sydney and the ACT (http://www.screen.nsw.gov.au/page/maps/nsw-state-council-map).
In Queensland – regional areas are defined as a resident outside of South East Queensland, being defined as a 100 kilometre radius of the Brisbane or Gold Coast central business district.
In the ACT – all areas in the ACT.
In Tasmania – all areas in Tasmania.
