31 October – Screenworks and Netflix have today named the four trainees who will commence their screen industry apprenticeships as part of Screenworks’ 2024 Regional Crew Pathways Program, delivered with the support of Netflix, Screen NSW and Screen Queensland.
Two trainees from NSW and two from QLD were selected to be placed on current productions. Archie Carter (Northern Rivers, NSW) and Gina Weston (Tweed Shire, NSW), along with Shanna Niehsner (Tablelands, Queensland) and Heath Tokely (Cassowary Coast, QLD).
Que Minh Luu, Netflix Director Content ANZ said: “Kudos to Archie, Gina, Shanna and Heath! As the 2024 Regional Crew Development Program trainees, you’ll receive an excellent introduction to the industry through Screenworks. We’re honoured that Netflix can contribute to the start of what we anticipate will be lengthy and rewarding careers in the screen industry.”
Screenworks CEO, Lisa O’Meara said she’s looking forward to seeing how each of the trainees advance their careers.
“We greatly value that by supporting this program Netflix has prioritised enabling regional crew to develop skills, build careers and be part of a solution to a national crew shortage. We have seen impressive ongoing employment of participants from past iterations of this program. We look forward to supporting four new regional practitioners as they embark on their below the line screen careers.”
The trainees are thrilled to have been selected for the program and excited about the year ahead.
Heath Tokely from QLD said: “I’m eager to work alongside the highly creative and talented people in the industry, learning from their expertise and contributing to the collaborative process. Driven by a love for storytelling, I look forward to being part of the teams that bring exciting projects to life.”
Shanna Niehsner from QLD said: “I am grateful to be provided the support and safety to enter the film and TV industry as a trainee. I mostly look forward to upskilling and contributing to the arts in my region.”
Archie Carter from NSW said “The Regional Crew Pathways Program is a golden opportunity for me and upon completing my traineeship I hope to have the connections and experience to make my way in the industry. I’m really excited about this opportunity and can’t wait to start work.”
Gina Weston from NSW commented: “I consider myself very lucky to have been given the opportunity to get my foot in the door. I can’t wait to get started.”
Screenworks is also looking for Production Companies and Heads of Departments from across Australia interested in taking on trainees for work placements in 2024/2025. Placements can be based anywhere along the East Coast. All trainees will be paid by Screenworks during their placement terms.
