Screenworks with the support of the Australian Directors Guild is delighted to be bringing the multi award-winning director Jennifer Peedom to the region to talk about the making of her film Sherpa. Jennifer will be in conversation with visiting Director Glendyn Ivin (The Beautiful Lie, Off Spring)

In 2014 Jennifer Peedom set out to make a film of the Everest climbing season from the Sherpa’s point of view. Instead that year she captured a tragedy that would change Everest forever.
At 6.45 am on the 18th of April 2014, a 14 million ton block of ice crashed down onto the Everest climbing route through the Kumbu Ice Fall, killing 16 Sherpas. The disaster provoked a drastic reappraisal of the role and recognition of the Sherpa in the Everest Industry
“We had planned to capture Sherpa Phurba Tashi’s, world breaking attempt to Summit Everest for the 22nd time” explains director Jennifer Peedom. “Instead, we returned with hundreds of hours of footage of the most tragic and transforming week on Everest”
These events brought injustices to the fore such as lack of recognition and financial compensation for the significant risks Sherpas take. Sherpa tells the story of how, in the face of fierce opposition, the Sherpas united in grief and anger to reclaim the mountain they call Chomolungma.
Glendyn Ivin is one of Australia’s leading drama directors and will be visiting the region for the Screenworks ADG Directors Intensive and will be in conversation with Jennifer Peedom following the screening.
Guest Speaker Bios
Jen Peedom is a BAFTA nominated director, well-known for her gripping, intimate portraits of people in extreme circumstances. Her credits include the internationally renowned documentaries MIRACLE ON EVEREST, LIVING THE END and SOLO, which played in the Official Selection of major documentary festivals including IDFA and Sheffield and won numerous awards including an AFI for Best Documentary (Australia’s Oscars).
She recently completed a major feature documentary SHERPA, with producers Bridget Ikin (Look Both Ways, An Angel at My Table) and John Smithson (Touching the Void, 127 Hours). It premiered at the 2015 Sydney Film Festival as the only documentary selected for the Official Competition. It received rave reviews on the international festival circuit, including Telluride, Toronto, London Film Film festivals, winning the prestigious Grierson Award for Best Documentary at the BFI London Film Festival and receiving a BAFTA nomination in 2016. The film was released in cinemas in the US, UK and Australia and New Zealand.
In 2010, Jen was the inaugural recipient of the David & Joan Williams Documentary Fellowship which recognizes and rewards creative ambition, intellectual rigour and innovation in documentary cinema. Jen is currently in production on a theatrical feature documentary called ‘Mountain’, which is a cinematic and musical collaboration with the world renown Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO), and British writer, Robert Macfarlane. The film will accompanied with live performances by the ACO at major concert venues. It will also screen as a standalone film in cinemas internationally.
She is represented by Bec Smith at United Talent Agency and Jungleboys for her commercial work.
Glendyn Ivin is one of Australia’s leading directors in television, film and commercials. He was recently listed in The Sydney Morning Herald as one of Australian televisions ‘Most Powerful and Influential’.
Glendyn came to attention with the short film CRACKER BAG, winning the Palme d’Or in 2003 at the Cannes Film Festival. Glendyn’s first feature film, LAST RIDE, starred Hugo Weaving and premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and won Best New Director at The Abu Dhabi Film Festival and the Jury Prize at the Rome International Film Festival.
For television, Glendyn’s credits include OFFSPRING (TEN), BEACONSFIELD (Nine), PUBERTY BLUES (Series 1 & 2, TEN) for which Glendyn was set up director, winning the 2012 AACTA award for Best TV Drama Series. Most recently Glendyn directed the World War I drama GALLIPOLI (Nine, 2015) and THE BEAUTIFUL LIE (ABC, 2015) nominated for the 2016 Logie Award for ‘Most Outstanding Drama’.
Glendyn is currently in post production on the Matchbox production ‘Seven Types Of Ambiguity’ to air on the ABC on 2016.
