Screenworks in conjunction with APRA AMCOS has today announced the two successful participants for their Screen Composing Bootcamp.
Emerging regional screen composers Tilly Jones from Leycester (Northern NSW) and Joshua Holt from Cairns (QLD) will each receive six weeks of one-on-one mentoring from two highly-acclaimed female screen composers – Kyls B. Burtland and Maria Alfonsine. The mentorships will assist their skills development, increase their experience and help them build confidence and capacity to compose music for screen content.
The APRA AMCOS/Screenworks Screen Composing Bootcamp provides an extraordinary opportunity for emerging regional screen composers to connect with the screen industry, showcase their talents and be exposed to career pathway opportunities. This program now extends throughout regional and remote Australia providing a unique opportunity for budding screen composers to get an in-depth and practical understanding of the role and methods of a Screen Composer.

The six-week bootcamp will kick off in the coming month with weekly and fortnightly exercises being set and assessed by the mentors before the two mentees join them in Sydney for a one-week practical work experience component.
2021 SCREEN COMPOSING BOOTCAMP MENTORS
Kyls B. Burtland
With 21 network TV series, dramas and animations, 48 films and 250 jingles under her belt, Kyls is a versatile and seasoned composer. In 2020 she won Best Score at the British Web Awards and in 2019 she won a scholarship to Song Hubs in Los Angeles. Her TV series include Whitlam Power and the Passion, Bad Mothers and Here Come the Habibs. Her large scale international interactive installations include the Shanghai Pavilion at World Expo, the LA Car Show where she has scored multiple exhibits from Infinity and Lexus to Audi, and music for the VIVID Festival’s 2015 projections on the Sydney Opera House. Kyls wrote the closing ceremony song for the Doha Olympic Events, sung by Aladdin star Lea Salonga and watched by 80 million people. She is a two-time winner of Australian Songwriter of the Year.
Maria Alfonsine
Maria’s recent work includes composing for the ABC series Black Comedy, composition and sound design for Hilary Bell’s adaptations of Shakespeare’s Take Two: Comedy of Errors at Riverside Theatre and Molière’s The Hypochondriac at Darlinghurst Theatre Co., and composer and songwriter on the Australian feature film Akoni (One Love Films). Maria’s work as a songwriter has featured in the ABC drama series Pulse, in the musicals The Song of A Princess and Dr McCarb’s Independent Surgical Hospital On The Hill as well as numerous short films and web series. Other credits include vocalist and music editor on Stephan Elliott’s (The Adventure of Priscilla – Queen of the Desert) feature film Swinging Safari. Maria is currently composer, songwriter and musical director for the Australian ABC TV series Wakefield (Jungle Entertainment) as well as teacher and unit coordinator for the 3rd year Bachelor of Music students in Composition for Creative Industries at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
