An information Session presented by Screenworks in partnership with Southern Cross University

Highly accomplished, industry-acclaimed screen media professionals are coming to Southern Cross University Lismore campus to share advice on breaking into the screen media industry and to announce a Mentorship Program.

Guest speakers include Screen Composer Matt Blackman (No Activity, Kitchen Cabinet), Screenwriter Belinda Chayko (Safe Harbour, Secret City), Visual Effects Producer Will Gammon (Lambs of God, 2040) and Screen Producer Lois Randall (Sea Change, Grace Beside Me).

Each of the guest speakers will talk about their career journeys, the work that they do and the opportunities that exist for graduates and early career screen media practitioners. The panel will be facilitated by Southern Cross University Associate Professor Grayson Cooke and students will be able to ask questions of the panel.

Afternoon tea will be provided following the panel, where other local screen media industry professionals will be in attendance to meet students and talk about local work opportunities.

This is a must-attend opportunity for anyone who is interested in composing, writing, filmmaking, digital media and visual effects, getting a job and pursuing a career in the screen media industry.

Matt Blackman – Screen Composer

Matt is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, producer and general music nerd with a strong love of creative collaboration with screen storytellers and music supervisors. He likes to delve in Orchestral Score, Electronica, Minimal Atmospheric, Oddball Acoustic, Heavy Rock, and whatever other curveballs may be required for a project to find its final vision. Some of Matts credits include; No Activity – Composer, 24 episodes USA | CBS/Stan | Funny Or Die, 2017-2019, Mr Black – Composer, 8 episodes Australia | Ten | CJZ, 2019.

 

Belinda Chayko – Screenwriter

A writer, producer and director, Chayko was the showrunner and lead writer for the International Emmy Award winning mini-series Safe Harbour (Hulu/BBC). She was also co-writer/story producer of Stateless, starring Cate Blanchett and Yvonne Strahovski, to be broadcast in 2020. A former journalist, she co-created and co-wrote the political thriller Secret City (Series 1 and 2, Netflix), and the mini-series Barracuda. A recipient of numerous scriptwriting accolades, including AWGIES and AACTAs, she has also directed two feature films – Lou, starring John Hurt (which she also wrote) and City Loop. Both films screened internationally at major festivals, including Toronto and Pusan. She is currently developing a returning series for Matchbox Pictures and a feature film for Tony Ayres Productions.

 

Will Gammon – Visual Effects Producer

William Gammon, Founding Owner and VFX Supervisor of Cumulus has gained the respect and trust of many Australian and international clients, whilst accomplishing a steady growth of his business and staff.
As a business owner, Will has used his problem solving skills to overcome some of the challenges of the Visual Effects industry to build a unique offering to both his staff and clients, with proprietary tools such as ‘Syclone’ and a diverse range of services including Post Production through partner company ‘Elements Post Production.
Will started his career in 2001 working for Australia’s ‘Rising Sun Pictures’, where he established his skills as a compositor for 9 years. Over those years he worked on many Hollywood films such as multiple ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Lord of the Rings’ films.
In 2010, Will transitioned to Animal Logic to sequence lead on ‘Legend of the Guardians’ and ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows pt2’.
Will established himself in Sydney and engaged with various studios like Fuel VFX and Dr. D on ‘Happy Feet 2’ to solve high complexity compositing and stereoscopic challenges on key sequences to roll out to the compositing team.

 

Lois Randall – Producer, Magpie Pictures

Lois Randall is an award-winning Screen Producer with a passion for distinctive narrative drama. She was Producer of the 8 episode series of Seachange, an ITV and Every Cloud co-production which premiered on the Nine Network as the highest rating TV drama for 2019. Through her production company Magpie Pictures she was Producer and EP of the Prix Jeunesse International UNESCO Prize, AACTA and LOGIE nominated 13 episode live-action children’s series Grace Beside Me, that screened on NITV, ABC and Disney Channel 2018/19, and which was awarded Children’s Series Production of the Year at the 2018 SPA Awards. She was also Producer of The Gods of Wheat Street, Miniseries of the Year, 2014 SPA Awards, and a Development EP on the 2018 AACTA Award-winning web series Deadlock, both Every Cloud Productions for ABC TV. Lois has also produced several acclaimed short films, was line-producer on the ABC series East of Everything and John Weiley’s Imax feature Solarmax. Lois’s professional experience includes Executive Director at Australian Screen Directors’ Association (now ADG) and Manager of Metro Screen.
