Backed by Netflix investment and supported by Screen Tasmania and AFTRS, Screenworks is proud to bring the highly successful Regional Crew Pathways Program to Tasmania in 2025. This program provides training, employment and career pathways in below the line roles in the screen industry for people living in Tasmania.
If you’re committed to a career in the film and television industry and looking for your first job this could be the opportunity for you. Your commitment may be demonstrated through a previous qualification, experience making your own content, or with transferable skills from another industry such as transport, logistics, photography, hair and make-up, building, administration.
Regional Crew Pathways Program is a two-step training program open to applicants from across Tasmania. In the first step, selected participants will undertake the AFTRS’ On-Set Onboarding course, held in Hobart, 26th – 28th February 2025. In the second step, course participants can then nominate to be considered for the six-month paid placement. The placements will predominantly be with production companies in Tasmania, but there may be some interstate opportunities as well. Â

Here’s how Regional Crew Pathways works:
- Start by putting in an application for the program.Â
- The selected applications will take part in the three-day On-Set Onboarding course, conducted by AFTRS in Hobart. The course will equip participants with everything they need to know about starting work on a film or TV set, from etiquette, paperwork and reading a call-sheet, to understanding the different roles that make up each department. Participants will also learn what makes a great CV and how to apply for crew work.
- Successful completion of AFTRS’ three-day On-Set Onboarding course grants you eligibility to apply for the placement program.
- The selected placement trainees will receive fully paid, contracted entry-level employment on professional film and TV productions for six months.

Eligibility:
All applicants must:
- Reside in Tasmania
- Demonstrate a committed interest to working in the screen industry including:
- Have completed studies at a higher education institution or registered training organisation in screen, media and/or related studies, OR;
- Be working in an area of transferable skills, such as photography, transport, logistics, administration, hair and make-up, hospitality, events, building, carpentry and electrical trades, OR;
- Have experience in making their own content
- Be over the age of 16 by January 31, 2025 to take part in the On–Set Onboarding course
- Be over the age 18 by January 31, 2025 to be eligible for Regional Crew Pathways placements
- Be available to participate in the three-day AFTRS’ On-Set Onboarding course on February 26, 27 and 28, 2025 in Hobart, and willing to commit to a six-month, full-time traineeship from March 1, 2025 if selected. Trainee placements will predominantly be with production companies in Hobart but there may be some interstate opportunities as well. Â
Applicants must NOT:
- Be in full-time education by February 24, 2025
- Have worked in a paid film or TV crew role previously

We are seeking people who are passionate about kickstarting their career in the screen industry, and can commit to six-months full-time work if selected.Â
We particularly encourage applications from young people, people from diverse backgrounds, and who otherwise would not have the opportunity to forge a career in the industry.
This program is ideal for graduates from screen and media courses provided by TAFE and universities, as well those with relevant and transferable skills from other industries such as hospitality, hair and make-up, building, and those who are making their own screen content.

Applicants don’t need professional experience working in a crew role on set.Â
All you need to apply is a qualification in screen, media or related studies from a higher education institution or registered training organisation, OR experience working in area of transferable skills, like photography, logistics, transport, administration, hair and make-up, hospitality, events, carpentry, building and electrical trades, OR experience in making and producing your own content.

Yes. If selected for the placement, you will be employed by Screenworks for the traineeship period and paid the Level 1 MPPCA minimum crew rate for a 40-hour work week, which is currently $952.50, plus 11.5% superannuation guarantee and loadings.Â
In the event of a larger production requiring their crew members to work a 10-hour day (industry standard), trainees will be remunerated for a 50-hour work week by Screenworks.

You will be introduced to a variety of entry-level roles during your on-the-job training, while being supported by your work placement manager.

If you have something you’ve created, such as a short film, please upload to a hosting website such as Youtube or Vimeo and provide us with a working, valid link in your CV or the body of your application. If it is password protected, please ensure that you share the password with us.

The AFTRS’ On-set Onboarding Course will take place in Hobart. The exact venue is TBC.
Screen Tasmania and/or AFTRS could offer some travel support if you need to travel to Hobart to attend the course. This can be discussed further if your application is successful.

It is expected that placements will predominantly be with production companies in Hobart but there may be some interstate opportunities as well. Â
Travel is sometimes unavoidable in the screen industry. You may need to be flexible around commuting interstate or being based away from home for some of your on-the-job training.Â
How will I be assessed and what happens when I complete my placement?

Objectives for placements will be set and monitored with the help of Screenworks, based on a training plan each selected participant who receives placement is required to complete. The training plan confirms their work and sets out their placement accomplishments.
At the completion of placement, all participants must provide a report detailing their experience and training.

In the instance you don’t successfully undertake the work on the placement you’ve been provided with, you and Screenworks will work to resolve any and all issues. If these issues cannot be resolved and the participant is unable to reach competence, they will be withdrawn from the program.
