We invite you to meet the talented alumni who have undertaken programs with Screenworks, check out their great work and consider engaging or collaborating with them on your next project

Here’s what some of Screenworks’ alumni have to say about the Regional Screen in LA program they participated in.

JOSHUA TYLER (SA), Regional Screen in LA, 2019

Joshua Tyler is an award-winning screenwriter and producer. He co-wrote and produced the hit film TOP END WEDDING and the picture book AUNTY’S WEDDING with Miranda Tapsell. TOP END WEDDING premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, was the second highest-grossing Australian film of 2019 and was nominated for Best Film at the AACTA Awards. He has also written for several award-winning animated series, including 100% WOLF and TASHI. He also starred in and co-wrote two seasons of the half-hour comedy PLONK.

Joshua is currently showrunning an original drama series for Amazon Prime, TOP END BUB, an eight-part series based on TOP END WEDDING, co-executive produced and co-created with Miranda Tapsell.

“Attending the 2019 Screen Australia Talent USA: LA (via Regional Screen in LA) was a game-changing opportunity. It gave me the industry understanding and confidence to executive produce TOP END BUB for Prime Video.

Directly because of my experience visiting streamers and producers during Regional Screen in LA, I felt confident when pitching TOP END BUB to Amazon and while navigating my EP duties with SAFC, Screen NT, Screen Australia and international sales partners.

Screenworks allowed me to broaden my networks and understanding of the global screen market and demystified the business aspect of our sector.”

CHANEL BOWEN (WA), Regional Screen in LA, 2022

Chanel is a proud member of the disability and hard-of-hearing communities, and a passionate advocate for disability stories on screen. She was recognised by Screen Producers Australia as a One to Watch and mentored throughout 2023 by Goalpost Pictures founder, Rosemary Blight. Chanel is trained as an Access Coordinator with Bridge06 and Screen Australia.

She was the 2022 participant for Regional Screen in LA, which allowed her to expand her producing experience with Animal Logic Entertainment and Truant Pictures in the USA. Having acquired her disability as an established film practitioner and experiencing difficulty re-entering an industry she knows, Chanel feels deeply committed to ensuring that disabled practitioners are given seats at our creative table.

In her spare time, she likes to cook dumplings from scratch, surf in the ocean and talk to her chickens about the meaning of life.

“Since heading to LA in 2022, I became a One to Watch celebrated by Screen Producers Australia and took my projects to market at Screen Forever 2023. During my time in the One to Watch program, I was mentored by Rosemary Blight and had two projects that garnered market interest at Screen Forever.

One of those projects, HARD AS PUCK, is close to closing finance and we’re aiming to be shooting in 2025.

Screenworks has continued to champion me by providing letters of support and a valuable community to bounce off.

I was selected by Screen Australia to be trained as an Access Coordinator in 2023 and have now worked on several projects advocating for disability access and inclusion. 2024 has opened up a world of collaboration through participating in the For Films Sake Platform Lab at Sydney Film Festival, attending MIFF 37 South and AIDC and Screen Forever for a second time. I’ve formally launched my own production company, Norfolk Pictures, which focuses on stories and practitioners from the disabled, regional and female communities.

My earliest supporters in my producing journey were Screenworks and Screenwest. They continue to have my back. I really wouldn’t be where I am now without people recognising the importance of helping regional practitioners with a hand up into the industry. Often, the”right place, right time” doesn’t apply to us (or the disabled community for that matter!), so the support of Screenworks has been invaluable as to my successes as a producer to date.”
